Northern jet stream would start shifting southward, which would bring cold polar air with it, causing colder and snowier North American winters. Loss of Arctic sea ice shifts the jet stream further south than normal resulting in increased rain during the summer in northwest Europe.
Normally, when the vortex is strong and healthy, it helps keep a current of air known as the jet stream traveling around the globe in a pretty circular path. This current keeps the cold air up north and the warm air down south.
But without that strong low-pressure system, the jet stream doesn’t have much to keep it in line. It becomes wavy and rambling. Put a couple of areas of high-pressure systems in its way, and all of a sudden you have a river of cold air being pushed down south along with the rest of the polar vortex system.
When polar ice melts, more warmth escapes from the ocean into the air — which can affect the atmosphere up to 30km high, weakening the polar vortex.
This allows frigid air to break out of the Arctic and threaten Russia and Europe with cold extremes
Large quantities of methane are stored in the Arctic in natural gas deposits, permafrost, and as undersea clathrates. Permafrost and clathrates degrade on warming, thus large releases of methane from these sources
The release of methane from the Arctic is in itself a major contributor to global warming as a result of polar amplification.
Sea ice, and the cold conditions it sustains, serves to stabilise methane deposits on and near the shoreline, preventing the clathrate breaking down and outgassing methane into the atmosphere, causing further warming.

The Gulf Stream influences the climate of the east coast of North America from Florida to Newfoundland, and the west coast of Europe
A warmer Arctic could halt the Gulf Stream, which brings warmer water and weather to north-western Europe. There’s no land at the North Pole — it’s a frozen ocean.
In winter in the Arctic it is complete darkness yet temperatures spiked 7.2 deg C The sun set in October 2017 and won’t be seen until March 2018 , yet the thermometer reads like summer. Temperatures should be sub zero but are instead above the freezing point.
The extent of frozen seawater floating in the Arctic Ocean reached new lows in January / February in 4 decades of satellite monitoring.

February 2018 also saw the greatest loss of Arctic sea ice since man came on earth.. Record-low levels of sea ice in the Bering Sea and the Arctic are shattering all known records.
Warming Arctic decreases the strength of the jet stream. This air current acts like a tourniquet keeping Arctic air from bleeding out over North America.
The extreme weather that has brought snow and bitter cold to much of Europe in recent days is part of a remarkable temperature inversion that has also enveloped the Arctic with unprecedented warmth.
Thinner, receding ice allows the ocean’s heat to escape more readily into the atmosphere, which the Arctic’s highly stable lower atmosphere traps near the surface during the polar night. As a result, winter surface air temperatures have warmed more in the Arctic compared with the global average.
Thinner sea ice is more mobile and deforms more easily from winds and currents. In February, southerly surface winds blew sea ice away from the northern shore of Greenland, causing the largest expanse of open ocean in winter ever recorded by satellites. S imilarly, the Bering Sea experienced extreme sea ice retreat this winter.
With more open ocean, major wind storms generate large waves that cause damaging coastal erosion, endangering oceanside towns.
In January 2018, the eastern US and Canada suffered a record-breaking “polar vortex” that brought plunging temperatures and led Niagara Falls to freeze.
A polar vortex is a mass of cold air that sits above the Earth’s north and south poles. This cold air is controlled by a large pocket of low pressure, which rotates in an anti-clockwise direction at the North Pole and clockwise at the South Pole.
A polar vortex is an upper level low-pressure area lying near the Earth's poles. There are two polar vortices in the Earth's atmosphere, overlying the North and South Poles. It ALWAYS exists near the poles, but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter. The term "vortex" refers to the counter-clockwise flow of air that helps keep the colder air near the Poles.
The jet stream is strongest in winter, when it has the greatest effect on weather in more densely populated parts of North America and Eurasia.
When it rolls along in relatively steady waves, normal weather ensues, with spells of cold, snow and intermittent warm-ups.
But when it coils far to the south, bitter cold Arctic air spills southward along with it. Wriggling like a garden hose, each southward kink in the wind tends to be balanced out by a northward bend somewhere else. That can lead to the western states, even Alaska, being unusually warm and dry while the middle of the country and the eastern states freeze.
