Left to fend for himself and facing a stream of soul crushing rejections he slowly sinks to his nostrils in the goop of indifference.
Arthur slowly begins to lose his grip on sanity and the director showcases his gradual descent into unadulterated madness.
We get to see Arthur’s accentuated dance movements which morbidly expresses ecstasy while in deep agony -- radically pushes the boundaries of the genre, into the land of the unhinged..
Do not expect anybody in the discomfited audience to laugh at this extreme nihilism, unless he is more mad than Arthur .
At his wit’s end , “life’s victim” Arthur now goes into a shell and plans his gruesome reprisals, each action of his is bloodier and more startling than the previous one.
He is now past point-break..
Unable to engage with the world , Arthur’s tussle is as much with his own worsening psychosis as it is with a city that he believes should be burnt down.
His eyes are thick with pain and sadness as another laughing fit overcomes him and the world retreats yet further.
Arthur giggles through his tears, he guffaws while in unbearable pain. Cynicism sears him from within.
As the mentally ill and socially ignored Arthur, Phoenix burns a hole in the screen.
We see great wracking sobs dredged from the depths of his contorted, hunched skeleton with every passing indignity..
Violence coils inside him . He is now like a taut wound up spring awaiting the final release trigger ..
His acting is intense and overwhelming — the way he shuffles, sits, smokes, shrinks.
The angularities of his scraggy skin and bones and the way he sways while in internalized rage is particularly disquieting.. Shadows carve out his protruding bones.
Breaking the acting barrier, as a loser holding a bad hand, struggling to find a coping mechanism amidst humiliations , slowly sinking in shit fuckin’ creek , Joaquin Phoenix fires on all cylinders, and how !
If Joaquin Phoenix split upper lip and all, ( he lost 24 kilos weight for the movie ) get’s the Oscar , nobody will complain..
Joker movie is too intense , that it un-nerves.
This type of dark malevolent movie of a man’s descent into despair, settling on violence as a final solution, has never been attempted before..
