Finance minster Arun Jaitley, in his budget speech today (Feb. 01), stated that the government will do everything to discontinue the use of bitcoin and other virtual currencies in India. He reiterated that India does not recognise them as legal tender and will instead encourage blockchain technology in payment systems.
The Hashgraph is a consensus protocol because it provides a distributed consensus platform.
It allows community users to generate transactions, and agree on the order in which they did the transactions, in an environment where everyone trusts no single user.
The Hashgraph can achieve a consensus, and still be fast, fair, provable, efficient and inexpensive.
The Hashgraph is fair because no single node can manipulate the transactions.
That means there is no way for an individual to control which instruction is going to occur, and which one is to be postponed.
In a blockchain, a miner is allowed to choose what to include and what to discard in their block. If two people say Muniyaandi and Muniyamma are transacting, a blockchain miner can choose to carry Muniyaandi’s transaction and drop Muniyamma’s , but in a Hashgraph platform, an individual must include both transactions in the order they were received.
The transactions from the Hashgraph are provable because once a transaction occurs; it only takes a few minutes before everyone in a community knows where the transactions will be queued in the ledger.
Moreover, everyone will be aware that the whole community knows about it, and therefore, implement the changes caused by the transaction, and discard it.
There is no need to keep the record in their ledger for life. That’s why unlike Bitcoin’s 160 GB blockchain, Hashgraph’s platform only needs a device to have less than one gig of storage.
Therefore, you can use a typical phone to run the Hashgraph platform.
The term technical term Byzantine means that no small group of members or single member can stop a community from reaching a consensus.
Furthermore, once a consensus has been reached, the smaller group or individual cannot change it, and every member will know eventually learn the network has reached a consensus.
Blockchain doesn’t guarantee a Byzantine agreement; each member never gets to a point where they believe they have reached a consensus.
For example, if a group of miner cut-off from the rest of the internet from a few minutes, the can easily reach a consensus within a short time.
In Hashgraph, no effort is wasted. That’s because the list of transactions or what’s equivalent to a “block” in the blockchain, is never discarded by the community.
All “blocks” are utilized to reach a consensus.
Also, the need for proof-of-work makes the blockchain technology expensive to run when the mining power of the community increases.
The proof-of-work is a series of calculations that are fulfilling any other purpose apart from slowing down the community in generating new blocks. Since Hashgraph doesn’t require proof-of-work, no “blocks” are wasted, and it’s therefore 100% efficient.
In Hashgraph, each transaction receives a time stamp that is an average of the time it was received by each community member.
That timestamp guarantees it’s provable and Byzantine. The timestamp remains reliable as long as the participating members are running reliable clocks on the mining machines.
In contrast, the blockchain only uses the timestamp of the machine that mined the block that was accepted by the 50+1 mining power.
The timestamp consensus is useful in the smart contract because it helps to determine if an event met a deadline or not.
The Hashgraph is resistant to DoS because an attack on one member of the network will not stop the rest of the community from continuing processing transactions successfully.
DoS attack - Denial of Service attack is a type of attack on a network that is designed to bring the network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic.
A total DoS attack on a Hashgraph requires the attacker to attack all members at once, which is prohibitively expensive. The Blockchain is resistant to DoS attack, also, but it attempts to avoid proof-of-work using the round robin or leaders system makes it vulnerable to it.
The attack only needs to be able to predict the current leader, attack them, identify the next one just before the handover, and attack them as well. The Hashgraph isn’t vulnerable to such attacks and doesn’t need proof-of-work.
DDoS, or Distributed Denial of Service attacks, begin when hackers take control of a large number of devices, or ‘bots’.
These can be anything from mobile phones to laptops – anything that can access the internet. Often, the owners of the devices have no idea that they’ve been hacked and never will.
The aim is to overwhelm the target website’s server with a huge amount of traffic, causing the site to slow down significantly or even stop working. This can be catastrophic for organizations, causing them to lose large amounts of money through site inactivity or suffer reputational damage.
DDoS works by targeting bandwidth – the attack is successful if the perpetrators can hurl enough traffic at the server to totally consume its bandwidth.
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are nothing new, but recent attacks are increasing in severity, complexity, and frequency and have therefore become a mainstream concern for businesses and private customers alike
That means that disaster can be averted by simply providing more bandwidth, preventing the attackers from being able to use all of it.
The Hashgraph is non-permissioned, although it doesn’t require proof-of-work.
For example, it allows members to vote according to their ownership stake or proof-of-stake. That stops Sybill attacks, where attackers use large hordes of fake accounts to prevent the system from reaching a consensus.
Therefore, it remains secure without the use of proof-of-work. In a permissioned system, only members who have been vetted are allowed to participate.

Coincheck is a bitcoin wallet and exchange service headquartered in Tokyo, Japan
In January 2018, Coincheck was hacked into and approximately 523 million USD was stolen.
It is an INSIDE job
Coincheck hasn’t disclosed how their system was breached beyond saying that it wasn’t an inside job. Coincheck lacked multi-signature security, a measure requiring multiple sign-offs before funds can be moved.
Coincheck has identified and published 11 addresses where all 523 million of the stolen coins ended up. You can see for yourself online. Trouble is, no one knows who owns the accounts

Tether is a digital currency from a company of the same name. The coin, USDT, is allegedly pegged to the US dollar, backed by real deposits in real banks... somewhere. Where? No one really knows.
Tether is issued by Tether Holdings Limited on the Bitfinex exchange. In short, Bitfinex basically has a faucet it can turn on to issue tether/USDT in exchange for whatever traders want to give it. Want to hand over your Bitcoin - it will gladly give you "market value" in USDT.
Where did those USDT come from? Fuck knows !
In theory, the dollars backing those tethers are held in a bank account.
Last year, the Paradise Papers (these are records of "secret" offshore bank accounts from hundreds of companies and individuals) revealed the CEO of Bitfinex is Jan Ludovicus van der Velde.
The CEO of Tether? Same guy Jan Ludovicus van der Velde. Nobody even knows if Jan baby exists .
Another couple of the people associated with Bitfinex and Tether are Philip Potter - Chief Strategy Officer, and Giancarlo Devasini.
On December 6th, The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission sent subpoenas to Bitfinex and Tether. But hey,this has NOT cramped their style or slowed them down
The last known audit was from September 2017, when Friedman LLP reported there was $400 million on deposit. All banks names were redacted in the report. Additionally, Friedman went so far as to basically say it had no idea where the money came from but when it looked there was money in account
Friedman has ended its relationship with both parties? Not only that, but Friedman went so far as to remove language on its website that indicated it had been involved with auditing Bitfinex.
Should USDT exist? Wouldn't it be more transparent to just use US dollars?

It is estimated that by 2021 only half of the Ether coins will be mined (a supply of more than 90 million tokens), but the majority of Bitcoins already have been mined (its supply is capped at 21 million).
For Bitcoin, the computers (called miners) running the platform and verifying the transactions receive rewards. Basically, the first computer that solves each new block gets bitcoins (or a fraction of one) as a reward.
Ethereum does not offer block rewards and instead allows miners to take a transaction fee. Ethereum is still experiencing growing pains and suffers from some of the same issues that Bitcoin does primarily in its scalability.
In 2016, $50 million in Ether was stolen by an anonymous hacker which resulted in questions about the platform’s security. This caused a split within the Ethereum community and it broke off into two blockchains: Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC).
There have been dramatic fluctuations in the price of Ether, but the Ethereum currency grew more than 13,000 percent in 2017.
The huge volatility makes investors cautious.
