Fibres are extremely rich and sensitive innervation on the nasal membranes.   There are  twenty times more autonomic nerve fibers within this membrane than are to be found in the cerebrospinal (central nervous) system.

The autonomic nervous system, and its two complementary components- the excitatory sympathetic nervous system (pingala nadi) and the relaxatory parasympathetic nervous system (ida nadi) are centrally activated from the nasal mucus membrane region as well as from the sympathetic and parasympathetic nuclei lying within the brain itself. 

Changes of electrical potential happen continiously within the mucus membrane of each nostril—the basis of Swara Yoga


There is always a dominant nostril.  This is due to the psycho physiological state, as reflected in a man’s breathing.  This nasal potential is constantly changing in the same way that the human "aura" has been seen to change continually, when photographed using high voltage Kirlian techniques. 

This "aura" has been observed to be in a state of constant flux, responding instantaneously to the ever changing thoughts, emotions and physiological functions of the individual—a  reflection of the pranic body in an electric field.

Swara Yogis always carried a Yoga dada –which is a short walking stick with a double arm grip. When the yogi wants to shift his predominant nostril or go to sushumna ( both nostrils free )  in a hurry, he hyperventilates at the same time using pressure of this stick uder his armpit. Sometimes he may pour cold water from his copper ota on his head ( murdhavu )

For the average person, the whole brain functions optimally only for the few moments when sushumna awakens every 1½ hours of the automatic breathing cycle. 

Proper use of the yoga danda, however, induces a continuing balance of both nostrils, enabling the yogis who follow the paths of tantra and swara yoga to maintain the flow of sushumna nadi and thereby experience meditative awareness for hours or days continually ( some hang upside down on tree branch ) .

When the horse Bucephalus of Alexander the Great saw these  hanging yogis— it got very nervous.

Nose breathing adds a huge reservoir of sensation to tap into to deepen your connection to yourself and bring your attention to the present moment

Nose breathing helps increase the fluctuations of the cerebral-spinal fluid by activation and movement of the sphenobasilar joint thereby nourishing the central nervous system. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator, meaning that it widens your blood vessels and thus promotes good blood circulation

In modern times , Swara yoga is a direct way of learning more about ourselves.  Everyone can become aware of the state of his breath in relation to his various ' daily activities, states of mind and feelings, no matter how busy he is.

When the flow of energy in ida and pingala is in harmony with each other, a third channel opens within the spinal canal in the centre of the spinal cord, called sushumna nadi, manifesting as an equal flow in both nostrils. An active sushumna expresses itself as a state of deep harmony in body, mind and spirit.

The entire universe is comprised of two forces, consciousness ( purusha -shiva)  and energy ( prakriti –shakti ) , which are interdependent and opposite, yet complementary. This is the second template ( Samkhya )  on the field of Brahman

The universe hangs as a kind of web of interacting energies, suspended and functioning within the framework of tensions developed by this fundamental polarity. Wherever one looks, within nature, within the body and within the mind, this polarity can be seen as light and dark, positive and negative, male and female and so on. 

This is the first template( Dvaita ) on the field of Brahman


This absolutely amazing dance of polarities was reduced by white men ( holding Monier Williams Sanskrit dictionary ) and shallow minds to what is written in Wikipedia below-  CHOOTIYA nonsense 


Dvaita Vedanta is 400 ceturies old.

At every level,  two great principles are at work, creating and motivating the universe. . . When this cosmic polarity of prana and consciousness manifests in the microcosmic unit of the human body, it takes the form of chitta Shakti and prana shakti, which correspond to ida nadi and pingala nadi.






These two mental and physical channels within the body apply to all levels of being from gross to subtle, forming the basis for every perception, activity and experience. They represent two distinct forces within the human environment - the ebb and flow of human existence.

Pingala regulates energy in the body, and ida regulates consciousness. These two nadis nourish the two hemispheres ( lobes ) of our brain, which then control each and every activity of the body and mind

When the right nostril flows more freely, representing the activity of pingala, our left hemisphere is dominant and we are extroverted, active, physically fitter and we feel warmer because our metabolism is in a dynamic state - exhibiting the solar qualities of our nature. 

When the left nostril flows more freely, representing the activity of ida, our right hemisphere is dominant and we become more introverted, passive, fitter for mental and artistic work, and we feel colder because our metabolism slows down - exhibiting the lunar side of our nature. 

The purpose of yoga is to awaken and balance ida and pingala, to enable pranic energy to flow and illumine the dark and sleepy areas of consciousness so that we wake up and realize our full potential as human beings.


Our brain is composed of two hemispheres, the right and the left, and together they are responsible for thousands of functions in the body. Most of these functions are the same and symmetrical in both hemispheres, but some are specific to or predominant in one hemisphere only..

When our pingala is sluggish, we slide deeper into the introversion of ida and encounter difficulties in communication with other people, not being able to express our thoughts clearly, though they may seem very clear to us.

On the other hand, the right hemisphere in the majority of the population is responsible for perceiving the emotional connotation of words and language, an ida activity.  

Hence, when we are too pingala or extroverted, we tend to miss fine aspects of non-verbal communication, not giving importance to the waysome things are said and just paying attention to what has been said.


THIS PLANET HAS NOT YET WOKEN UP TO THE ASTOUNDING SECRETS OF YOGA..  ITS AMAZING EFFECTS ON VAGUS NERVE AND AMYGDALA










When the left nostril ( right brain lobe for right hander ) is PREDOMINANT it is the lunar energy or Ida Nadi which is flowing. 

When the right nostril ( left brain lobe ) DOMINATES, the solar energy or Pingala Nadi is flowing. When we breathe in through the left nostril, ida nadi or the parasympathetic nervous system as well as the right hemisphere of the brain are stimulated. 

When we breathe in through the right nostril, pingala nadi or the sympathetic nervous system as well as the left hemisphere of the brain are stimulated. The right brain lobe controls the left side of the body and vice versa







The right hemisphere  ( right lobe –subconscious for right handers ) is dominant in perceiving the space around us, the patterns within it, the notion of direction and distance, depth and position .
Positive, relaxed, friendly, supportive situations activate the left hemisphere, while negative, anxious, dangerous, threatening situations activate the right hemisphere.

In positive and friendly circumstances, we embrace the world through pingala, and in times of anxiety or threat we withdraw into the inner world of ida.

Recognition of facial expressions is the function of the right hemisphere exclusively.The left hemisphere predominantly deals with logical, verbal, mathematical and analytical thinking, guiding our actions in the outer world of pingala, while the right hemisphere governs intuitive, integrative thinking that recognizes patterns in the world around us, leading us into the inner world and deeper understanding of ida.

EEG studies done during aptitude testing of volunteers showed increased activity of the left hemisphere (pingala) during verbal tasks, and increased activity of the right hemisphere (ida) during spatial tasks.

In the integrated evolution of human beings, the right hemisphere or ida, the mental energy domain, takes care of music and art awareness, three-dimensional perception, creativity and imagination, insight and intuition. The left side, the domain of vital energy or pingala, takes care of written and spoken language, dealing with numbers and abstract problems, rational decision-making, accurate judgement and discrimination.

To live life fully and evolve in a harmonious way we need both kinds of abilities. Therefore, achieving and maintaining balance between the right and left brain, between ida and pingala, has very real implications in our daily life, in the way we function, interact, grow and evolve. And here swara yoga does come in the picture.

Yogis investigating the science of swara yoga milliniums ago  have discovered that the activity of ida nadi, the right brain, correlates to the airflow in the left nostril, and that pingala activity correlates to the airflow in the left nostril. 

They also found that for most of the time one nostril flows more freely than the other and that this alternate dominance of one nostril over the other and the switch between the two happens in regular cycles of approximately 90 minutes, throughout the day and throughout life. 

Only during the brief periods of change do both nostrils flow equally, indicating the flow of prana through sushumna.

In scientific terms, the nasal cycle is defined as a side-to-side fluctuation in nasal engorgement and airflow, or as alternating congestion and decongestion of the nasal turbinates, the bony prominences within the nasal cavity covered with mucosal lining, very rich in blood and nerve supply.

 The nasal cycle is of considerable interest to ENT specialists and neurobiologists and it has been found to strongly correlate with a number of modifications of bodily functions, such as the relative EEG predominance of the contra lateral brain hemisphere,rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep patterns , verbal and spatial cognitive processing and the release of endocrine agents such as noradrenalin, a potent stimulator of the sympathetic nervous system.

The pacemaker for this cycle is located at the base of the hypothalamus, in a densely packed cellular structure called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which is involved in the control of a number of circardian and ultradian rhythms in the body, and is often referred to as `the principal biological clock' or `the mind's clock'.




YOGA CAN HARNESS ALL BIOLOGICAL RHYTHMS 


The medium through which the nasal cycle affects numerous bodily functions is the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which has a direct influence on all sense organs as well as inner organs and systems, including the brain and the cortex. 

It is composed of two divisions, and most of the organs in our body receive fibres from both divisions exhibiting opposing effects. 

One division is the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) which prepares us for an increased level of activity and the fight or flight response, which includes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output, a diversion of blood flow from the skin and splanchnic vessels of the internal organs to those supplying the skeletal muscles, increased pupil size, bronchiolar dilation, contraction of sphincters in the digestive system, and metabolic changes utilizing fat and glycogen. 

In other words, the sum total of these changes is to enable us to be maximally physically fit, to see and perceive most clearly and be ready for an explosive muscular action with a reduced tendency to bleeding in case of injury, with one purpose in mind - to fight or to flee, and save our skin.

In contrast, the influences of the other division, the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), lead to rest, conservation and restoration of energy and thus to a reduction in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure, a facilitation of digestive processes and the elimination of waste products.  It is an opportunity to rest, repair and consolidate. 

As a whole, the autonomic nervous system is understood as a `housekeeping' system which ensures our smooth functioning and adaptative responses to different situations in the outer and inner environment, and it is controlled primarily by the hypothalamus.


A unique feature of the ANS, which is often overlooked, is that it shows an ultradian rhythm, the regular pattern that repeats itself several times within the period of 24 hours. The sympathetic nervous system, for example, dominates one side of the body and at the same time the parasympathetic nervous system dominates the opposite side.    

After approximately every 90 minutes these systems switch dominance. This process is mediated by the biological clock in the hypothalamus, and affects all the organs that receive fibres from the SNS and PNS, including the cerebral hemispheres.   

The nasal breathing pattern correlates to the alternating cerebral hemispheric activity, both in the waking state and in sleep  

This alternating endogenous rhythm within the autonomic nervous system and its two divisions, the SNS and PNS, is clearly connected to the daily rhythms of the neuroendocrine, cardiovascular and insulin systems,as well as to the secretion of stress hormones, cateholamines, which also show an alternate dominance in the left and right side of the body, and that this left-right pattern is tightly coupled with the natural rhythm of the nasal cycle


Modern scientists have verified the science of breathing mentioned in Yoga. 

They have verified, using the EEG device, that alternate nostril breathing, as it is used in nadi shodhana, stimulates the contra-lateral brain hemisphere, i.e. that breathing through the left nostril stimulates the right hemisphere, and breathing through the right nostril stimulates the left hemisphere. 

In nadi shodhana breathing pattern increased EEG power in the opposite hemisphere regardless of the phase of the nasal cycle. 

Magnetoencephalography, explored the effects of exclusive left or right nostril breathing that correspond to chandra and surya bheda pranayamas, at one breath per minute for 31 minutes, and showed similar patterns of contra-lateral brain activation.







Increased EEG activity in the brain, specifically in the limbic system, is generated by a neural mechanism in the superior nasal meatus, the upper nasal canal located in the nasal cavity and which is connected to the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the maxillary nerve. 


They also evoked the same kind of EEG response by gently blowing air directly into the upper nasal cavity, without inflating the lungs.

Local anaesthesia of the nasal mucosal membrane suppressed the EEG changes in the opposite hemisphere.

On the psychological level, there are studies that show a correlation between breathing predominantly through one nostril and the corresponding increase in brain activity in the opposite hemisphere, leading to increased cognitive performance specific to that hemisphere.

Right-nasal dominance related to relatively greater verbal performance, stimulating pingala, left brain activity. Left-nasal dominance was coupled to relatively greater spatial skills, stimulating ida, right brain activity.

Autism and early language impairment is associated with left-handedness, left-eyedness and left nasal dominance . . . Patients with autism had no normal nasal cycle—they have almost continuous left nasal breathing.

In yoga physiology, autism is understood as a state of imbalance in which ida nadi is far too overactive and children become overly introverted. The state of imbalance presents itself as the predominant airflow through the left nostril. 

Implications of these scientific findings point to yogic measures that can induce the state of balance in the ida-pingala system: 

Surya bheda pranayama activates the breathing pattern through the right nostril, pingala. By activating the extrovert human nature, this gradually brings about a state of harmony. 

Matsya kridasana on the left side of the body with the right knee bent would further benefit those children.  This  asana stimulates pingala.




Vagus, as the principal part of the parasympathetic nervous system, is controlled by ida nadi.   Use of chandra bheda pranayama to gently stimulate the vagal nerve in a natural way, without any side effects of surgery, may help in difficult cases of epilepsy.

 Following surya bheda, there is a significant increase in systolic, diastolic and mean pressure. In contrast, the systolic and diastolic pressure decreased after nadi shodhana and the systolic and mean pressure were lower after chandra bheda. 

Nadi shodhana is  the best choice for long-term management of high blood pressure (HBP), and surya bheda as a tool to rectify a tendency towards low blood pressure.

Matsyakridasana leads to significant changes in the nasal airflow, resulting in decongestion and consequent increased airflow through the upper nostril and at the same time to congestion and decreased airflow through the lower nostril.

Yoga Chudamani Upanishad (V. 31-33) 5000 BC  says  : "The breath goes out making the sound HAM and comes in producing the sound of SO.  The jiva is therefore repeating the mantra HAMSO continually 21,000 times, twenty four hours a day. This is called ajapa japa." 

If one listens carefully to his breath he may hear the sound of HAMSO ( or Soham ).   The Upanishads declare that constant awareness of this japa of the breath can reduce a man’s karmic baggage as he will remain IN THE MOMENT as behave accordingly.   

This is the philosophical significance of the power of swara.

An ion is an atom or molecule that has a non-zero net electrical charge (its total number of electrons is not equal to its total number of protons).  A cation is a positively-charged ion, while an anion is negatively charged. Because of their opposite electric charges, cations and anions attract each other and readily form ionic compounds, such as salts.

The nose is very significant, for at the root of the nasal cavity is a uniquely designed prana-detecting device.  This is a thin, perforated bone, known in medical terminology as the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone.

The cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone is received into the ethmoidal notch of the frontal bone and roofs in the nasal cavities. 

Within these perforations the minute filaments of the olfactory nerve reside. They relay information to the brain concerning the constituents of the air. When electrically charged ions contact these filaments, the brain and main nervous system automatically become energized.

This charging travels to the limbic system of the brain, in which perception is transformed into experience. 

Breathing directly affects our emotional responses to life, and conversely the arousal of different emotions is reflected in the breath.   If one breathes through the mouth, the entire air mass and prana travel straight down the trachea without stimulating the brain and nervous system.  Therefore the activation of the entire nervous system is dependent on nasal breathing.

The ancient rishis called the negative flow ida and the positive flow pingala.  The maharishis  of yore knew the techniques to channelize bio-energy or prana throughout the body.

They understood that the flow of energy, whether internal or external, is constantly being circulated from the more highly charged to the lesser charged centres in order to create a balance between the positive and negative poles.  

Negative ions  help people sleep better . With quality sleep, cells are repaired, the immune system is strengthened and mental functions are sharpened. Quality sleep can also help reduce the occurrence of common pains such as backache, and increase your resistance to illness.

Pranayama creates static electricity in the body which helps to recharge the positive ions breathed in from the environment and convert them into negative ions.   The effect is the same as that created by rain and thunderstorm 

Hatha Yoga Pradipika states: "If the air is inhaled through the  left nostril, it should be expelled again through the right.  Then breathing in through the right and retaining, it should  be expelled through the left. "(2: 10) .  

This particular practice,  which is known as nadi shodhana, brings about regularity in  the whole system and is extremely important in swara yoga  for  harmonizing the pranic flow.

The specific functions of the cerebral region of the brain correlate with the activities of ida and pingala.  The  cerebrum is symmetrical, consisting of the right and left  hemispheres. 

The right brainlobe  governs the left side of  the body and the left brainlobe governs the right side of the body.   Ida is connected to the right hemisphere and  pingala to the left. 

Pingala emerges on the right hand side of mooladhara,  exactly opposite to ida. It spirals up the spinal column,  crossing ida at the four major energy centres, and terminates  at the root of the right nostril.

Pingala governs the whole  right side of the body.  To control pingala the breath in the  right nostril is manipulated by the Swara Yogi.

An electrical circuit, has  three specific wires-- one positive, one negative and one neutral.

Likewise, within the body there are three specific nadis for conducting energy. In yoga  the negative line is ida, the channel of manas shakti  or mental force .The positive  line is pingala, which channels the dynamic energy of prana  shakti.  

In order to avoid short-circuiting of these lines there  is a third channel, sushumna , which functions as an earth  wire, being rooted in mooladhara chakra, when it is in its  dormant state.

But the real purpose of sushumna is to  provide a channel for the spiritual energy, which is a greater force than either manas or prana shakti. 

The swara yogi  manipulates the flow of air in the left nostril in order to control ida directly and either bring about its influence at will or suppress it when necessary. 




According to swara yoga, left nostril breathing influences the activities of manas shakti, and indicates that introversion and mental creativity predominate so that any extremely dynamic or extrovert activity should be avoided.


Ida nadi, the negative channel, brings consciousness into every part of the body.   Shiva Swarodaya likens its nature to the energy created by the moon; therefore, it is also  known as the chandra or lunar nadi.

Ida is associated with  the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which sends impulses to the visceral organs to stimulate the internal  processes. This creates a general state of relaxation in the  superficial muscles, thus lowering the outer body temperature.   Ida is cooling, relaxing and introverting.


Pingala is the transmitter of prana shakti.  It is the positive  aspect, also known as the surya or solar nadi because its  energy is as invigorating as the sun's rays.

Pingala energy  activates the physical body and externalizes awareness. It is  associated with the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which  releases adrenaline to stimulate the superficial muscles. 

The SNS prepares the body to cope with stress and external  activity; for example, it makes the heart beat rapidly and  heats the body.   Pingala is energizing,  heating and extroverting. 

The negative ion concentration in ida nadi quickly increases from its rest or basal concentration during left nostril inhalation.   It then reaches a maximum and begins to fall off gradually, because the concentration of ions is greater in the regions of low pranic density and less in regions of high pranic density.

At the ionoplasmic centres (chakras) where ida and pingala are in the closest proximity, one being in front of sushumna and the other behind, there is an effect called ionic migration and annihilation. When the negative ions from ida migrate towards pingala, attracted by its positive ions, many are annihilated as they merge.

We find two types of ions in the atmosphere:--

Small negative ions or normal ions.--- They possess high electric activity, being tiny portions of energy in almost pure look. In the air inhaled by us they are provided by the separate oxygen atoms or nitrogen bearing the charge equal to charge of one electron. Small negative ions introduce vitality in organism and correspond to atmospheric prana in its active form.

Big or slow ions.--- They consist of polymolecular kernel and as if this kernel of normal negative ion which has got to trap.

Small negative ions possess high speed, are very mobile while slow ions are something like the flycatchers which are catching and sticking together small ions. Availability of considerable number of the big slow ions formed as a result of capture of mobile ions reduces conductivity of air. It occurs when air is polluted, for example, by dust, smoke or fog.

Generally it is possible to tell that concentration of small ions in the atmosphere decreases with increase in concentration of big ions in the atmosphere and vice versa, that is concentration of one is inversely proportional concentration of others. That is why in the polluted atmosphere of the cities there is surplus of big ions.

In view of that negative ions are "workers of intracellular life"-- it is obvious how city atmosphere is poor in prana.


Prana can be explained in terms of ions. When enough energy acts upon a gaseous molecule, the  electron is ejected and can be attached to an adjacent molecule. When the displaced electron attaches itself to an adjacent molecule, it becomes a negative ion. 

The original molecule then becomes a positive ion. Positive and negative ions are the components of the air one breathes. 

When one inhales negative ions, they increase the level of prana in the body. The opposite happens when we inhale positive ions. 

On a mountain or by the beach, there are about 6,000 negative ions per square foot while in the city or in a stuffy room we may have less than 40 negative ions per square foot. 

It has been proven that being in a an environment with an abundance of negative ions improves mood and overall energy levels. Negative ions are not prana, but when one inhales them the level of prana in the body increases. 

This is because air is a vehicle for prana to enter the body. It has also been observed that the ability to assimilate negative ions goes up during yogic practices such as pranayama.

Negative ions are oxygen atoms charged with an extra electron. They are created in nature by the effects of water, air, sunlight and the Earth’s inherent radiation.

Negatively charged ions are most prevalent in natural places and particularly around moving water or after a thunderstorm.

That taste in the air and feeling you get at the beach, near a waterfall or after a storm is your body being saturated in the benefits of negative ions.

Negative ions enhance our mood, stimulate our senses, improve appetite and sexual drive, provide relief from hay fever, sinusitis, bronchial asthma, allergies, migraines, even post operative pain and burns. 

Negative ions stimulate the reticuloendothelial system which is a group of defense cells in our bodies which marshal our resistance to disease. Negative ions promote alpha brain waves and increased brain wave amplitude which results in a higher awareness level. The body is better able to absorb oxygen into the blood cells, oxidize serotonin and filter airborne contaminants.

You might have noticed that you feel more refreshed near the ocean, a waterfall or even taking a shower. This is because all of these areas have a higher concentration of negative ions to positive ones.

Static can also come from synthetic building materials, synthetic carpets, synthetic furniture, synthetic fabrics and clothing, plastics, urethane finishes, as well as EMF’s. All of these synthetic materials and objects will greatly upset the normal ion balance.

Indoor air that has a higher concentration of positive ions can lead to Sick Building Syndrome. In such room people do NOT get proper REM sleep and they see POOCHANDI  ( sinister ghosts ) at night.

We generate a type of static electricity within the body which attracts negative ions from the environment into our system, therefore even in a confined space, in a closed room where there are not many negative ions per square centimetre, after the practice of pranayama, we will still feel vibrant, energetic and light, because we have built up this form of static energy which is attracting the negative ions from the environment

The quality of air we breath in, is the quality of Prana we take on. The exhilaration and vitality experienced near a waterfall or high in the mountains is due to the Prana quantum present in the air. 

While the dullness we experience in air polluted or air recycled area is due to the poor Prana quantum in the air. Science has attempted to explain this phenomenon in terms of positive and negative ions.. Areas with excellent air quality have high levels of energy, negative ions,and Prana.

An ion is a molecule that has lost or gained an electron through various atmospheric forces or environmental influences. Positive ions are  molecules that have been stripped of an electron positive ions are so small they can be absorbed directly into your bloodstream from the air you breathe. 

An excess of positively charged ions in your environment is believed to contribute to tiredness and a lack of energy, tension, anxiety and irritability. 

Positive ions in the air have even been investigated as a contributing factor for asthma and depression. Negative ions are created when a molecule gains a negatively charged electron. Due to this nature, they are statically attracted to airborne particles like dust, mold and other pollutants and potential allergens.

By attaching to these pollutants and allergens they give them a negative charge and, rather than drifting in the air, they are grounded and fall to the floor or nearest surface. Even bacteria and viruses circling in a room can be cleared by negatively charged ions attaching to them and removing them from the air.

In the natural world, negative ions are in abundance, particularly in forests, at the beach and most intensely near waterfalls. This is a good part of the reason why you usually feel so great in these places and find it difficult to be tired or depressed The most powerful demonstration of the energizing and refreshing effects of negatively charged ions can be tasted in the air after a thunderstorm. 

Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.

.Normally only1/10th of the human brain is in use because an enormous amount of energy is required to recruit the entire brain to function as a whole. However, Pranayama helps supply the required energy necessary to stimulate the dormant areas of the brain, awakening the genius within.

The advent of outer space exploration has brought science's attention to electromagnetic fields in the atmosphere which are conducted by the earth. These fields consist of positively and negatively charged fragments of molecules known as ions, upon which life is dependent for producing energy. 

A negative ion has the charge of one electron, and a positive ion the charge of one proton. Of the two, negative ions are the most active electrically.

In chemistry, FREE RADICALS radicals are atoms with unpaired electrons on an otherwise open shell configuration. These unpaired electrons are usually highly reactive. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and Cell suicide, or apoptosis.

 Free radicals are very unstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the needed electron to gain stability. Generally, free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule, "stealing" its electron. When the "attacked" molecule loses its electron, it becomes a free radical itself, beginning a chain reaction.

Once the process is started, it can cascade, finally resulting in the disruption of a living cell. Environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the electron-"stealing" reaction. 

Colloidal silver has an electrical NEGATIVE ionic charge ( anion ) , which disables certain enzymes. Silver invades diseased cells to destroy pathogens and immediately flush it out . It neutralises free radicals.

Silver can remove dust which are positively sharged. Positive ions are “ takers” and have a exhausting and draing effect on the human body. A water fall mist or seashore spray emanates “ givers” negative ions, drawing mystics and creative people for the Alpha state. 

Negative ions in the blood stream accelerate the delivery of blood to the cells. Remember, broad band antibiotics are effective against a dozen organisms ( till they become resistant super bugs ), while silver is effective against about 700.

It is safe for pregnant women, being an electromagnetic process. It is a very old vedic tradition in India to use silver foil to cover hard diary sweets , and to use negative ions of colloidal silver for antimicrobial action, to improve metabolism ( to prevent obesity ) , to speed up oxidation of Serotonin ( an ancent Viagra for sexual drive ).

Negative ions give clarity of thought and energy.

In the Swara Shastras it is written that if the breath can be analysed and its significance understood, deeper knowledge of the cosmos will unfold and the knowledge of the Vedas can be realised. The individual consciousness can perceive cosmic consciousness by means of swara.   

The breath, carrying both prana (vital energy) and chitta (consciousness) vibrates from the force of these energies and sound is thereby produced.

All the ancient Vedic texts refer to the subtle and vital life giving force called prana, which is described as being similar in nature to lightning. Solely due to prana, the whole universe exists and without its presence no creature can live. 

Although prana exists in the air and in all forms of matter, it is neither of the two. Nor is prana the breath, but it is contained within the breath, being a part of the swara. 

Prana maintains all organic life. Just as a battery stores electrical energy, so it is essential for every organism to store prana in order to enable activity and mobility.

 Maharishis with high prana levels and high soul vibrations keep their hand on someones head to transfer prana.  Prana can be transferred by a chakra to chakra hug.

By practising swara yoga, the store of prana can be increased, thereby activating the latent areas of the brain. Swara yoga directly controls the input and output of prana, enabling us to regulate our whole physiological system. ..

Discovery of Kirlian photography has enabled scientists to actually see the corona of these fields.  Maharishis who could see auras  were well aware of the principles of energy fields without requiring the aid of modern technology.

In Swarodaya Yoga Shiva tells Parvati about opposing currents and breath.  Swara yogis know the positive and  negative energy currents flowing in the body

By practising swara yoga, the store of prana can be increased, thereby activating the latent areas of the brain.  Swara yoga directly controls the input and output of prana, enabling us to regulate our whole physiological system.

The Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous systems are what is referred to in Yoga parlance as the Ida and Pingala Nadis.  

The Sympathetic Nervous System primes the body for action known as the Fight and Flight response. This keeps the energy and blood circulating to the skeletal muscles. The Parasympathetic Nervous System is for rest-and-digest" or "feed and breed. This keeps the energy and blood concentrated near the organs.

Sympathetic ( Tamas ) and Parasympathetic divisions ( Rajas ) typically function in opposition to each other.  But this opposition is better termed complementary in nature rather than antagonistic. 

For an analogy, one may think of the Sympathetic division as the accelerator and the Parasympathetic division as the brake. The Sympathetic division typically functions in actions requiring quick responses. The Parasympathetic division functions with actions that do not require immediate reaction.

The Sympathetic Nervous System originates from the left side of the Sushmna.  It flows into the left nostril ultimately crossing and powering the right side of the brain.

As long as our Sushumna is clogged, the energy cannot make it to the Third Eye (Ajna Chakra) and we live in darkness (Body Consciousness).   The Third Eye literally turns on just like a light when it receives the proper energy from the Sushumna.

Swara yoga explains that the two major energy circuits, ida  and pingala, can be regulated and controlled by means of  the breath. If these currents are not flowing properly, it  becomes quite evident in the breath

Unconscious breathing is controlled by the medulla oblongata in the brain stem, a region known as the primitive brain, while conscious breathing comes from the more evolved areas of the brain in the cerebral cortex.

Each of our actions can be classified under these 3 types of swara, viz left for mental actions, right for physical actions and both swaras together in spiritual actions. This means if the right nostril flows while we are meditating, then we will have physical obstacles, like unstableness or restlessness of body.

Similarly if the left nostril is flowing while meditation, then though physically we are undisturbed, but the mind will wander here and there. It is only that when both the nostrils are open, that our mind becomes one pointed and focused.

The right and left swara function like positive and negative currents in our body. It is only that when both the currents are on, our spiritual powers are on. This brings a body in disease to a free state. These positive and negative currents are compared to the positive and negative ions of the human body.

And it is a proven fact about how these ions affect our whole body mechanisms. And therefore Swara yoga claims that with the manipulation of the breath flowing in and out through our nose we can regulate the inner body mechanisms and develop control over all pranic and mental activities.


In modern physics all matter including the air we breathe consists of ions, microscopic electrically charged particles which are either positive or negative.

The intense activity of these positive or negative ions on the area immediately surrounding them is referred to as the ionic field. Ionic concentrations affect the consciousness in many ways. In order to demonstrate this, let us apply the ionic field theory to pranayama.

With each breath, sensory receptors in the respiratory system send signals via the vague nerve to the brainstem.

Breathing brings oxygen in the blood but also charges the entire body and renews our reserves of vital energies and help to equalize disturbed energy patterns.

The oxygen that we breathe comes in two forms: stable and unstable oxygen molecules. Unstable oxygen molecule (with temporary unstable electron balance), science named ‘air ions’ . Air ions are coming in forms of positive and negative ions.

When a student commences pranayama, the first one he usually learns is nadi shodhana which means purification of the nadis.

The method of practice is as follows. First breathe in through the left nostril, keeping the right closed. Hold the breath, then closing the left nostril breathe out through the right and hold the breath. Breathe in through the right; hold the breath; breathe out through the left; hold the breath. The mouth should be closed throughout. This constitutes one round.

The relative durations of inhalation, retention, exhalation, retention are altered at different stages according to ability or need of the student.

Let us now look at the different stages of nadi shodhana and consider their effect on the ionic field.
Inhalation through the Left Nostril---

The negative ion concentration in ida nadi quickly increases from its rest or basal concentration during left nostril inhalation. It then reaches a maximum and begins to fall off gradually, because the concentration of ions is greater in the regions of low pranic density and less in regions of high pranic density. 

For example, there is a high ionic concentration in the region of prana, udana, samana and a low concentration in apana and vyana. The ionic concentration is thus not homogeneous yet.

Internal Retention of Breath---
When the breath is held, two main processes occur:---

1. The ionic concentration in ida which has just been increased becomes homogeneous, i.e. the concentration of ions becomes equal in all parts of the ida nadi.

2. At the ionoplasmic centres (chakras) where ida and pingala are in the closest proximity, one being in front of sushumna and the other behind, there is an effect called ionic migration and annihilation. When the negative ions from ida migrate towards pingala, attracted by its positive ions, many are annihilated as they merge. 

This has the effect of:

a      ---   depleting the number of ions in both ida and pingala, but more so in pingala, because of the high concentration of negative ions in ida.
b     
---- causing energy to be liberated in various forms such as heat, light and pranic energy, which has either got to be absorbed, transformed or removed in part.

Exhalation through the Right Nostril--

During exhalation through the right nostril it is principally the heat component of the energy produced by the above ionic annihilation process which is liberated. Pingala nadi has a very small concentration of positive ions and is thus prepared to receive the influx of positive ions in the next part of the round. Inhalation through the right nostril.

Inhalation through the right nostril increases the positive ion concentration in pingala. It rises quickly to a maximum level and then decreases slowly in the same way described for ida nadi.
Now we have the following situation:--

1. The negative ion concentration in ida nadi has been increased, homogenized, then decreased slightly due to ion migration and annihilation. This new concentration is still above the basal level but by very little.

2. The positive ion concentration pingala has been increased but has not yet been homogenized by the process of retention which follows shortly.

3. Now a greater ion migration and annihilation effect is taking place as the positive iompn pingala have more mobility and energy. This has the effect of causing a further ionic depletion in ida and also, of course, in pingala; it is a kind of ionic see-saw.

External Retention of Breath---

With retention, the ionic concentrations are homogenized and the ionic migration and annihilation effect continues.

Normal Breathing--

In normal breathing there is an alteration in the flow of breath in the nostrils. If you check which nostril is more free to breathe through at different times you will observe that sometimes it is the right, sometimes the left, and occasionally both flow equally. The science of these alternating flows is called swara, yoga.

 In swara yoga it states that in the average healthy individual, one nostril remains predominantly open for approximately one hour and 30 minutes; both nostrils then flow equally for ten minutes, after which the other nostril remains predominantly open for one hour and 30 minutes, then again both flow equally, and so on throughout the day. This is readily observable and can be verified at any time.


There are two ionic migration effects taking place:

1. The negative ion migration from ida to pingala whenever the concentration of negative ions in ida is increased due to left nostril breathing.

2. The positive ion migration from pingala to ida whenever there is an increase in its ionic concentration due to right nostril breathing.

These effects take place virtually simultaneously during normal breathing since, even when one nostril flow is predominant, there is still a flow through the other. After some time, the rate of absorption of the positive ions from pingala by ida will equal the rate of absorption of negative ions by pingala, i.e. an equilibrium will occur. This is an unstable equilibrium, however, and is present only for a very short time. 

In nadi shodhana, we are in effect mirroring the behaviour of the cyclic changes occurring during normal breathing, by purposely breathing in through the left nostril, holding, and breathing out through the right and so on. The difference is that in normal breathing, both nostrils remain equally open or free for a time, whereas in nadi shodhana the breath is held.

Thus, there is a connection between breath retention and having both nostrils open. In swara yoga it states that when ida and pingala nadis are both flowing equally, then sushumna, the nadi responsible for the development of higher yogic abilities, starts functioning.

During retention of breath, sushumna nadi is brought into operation. This is the nadi which is active when the point of unstable equilibrium discussed earlier occurs.

Breath retention thus awakens sushumna nadi. In all of the classical works on yoga it is stated that for full spiritual benefits from yoga sadhana, try to ensure that the sushumna nadi is flowing when practicing meditation or higher techniques. 

The right and left swara function like positive and negative currents in our body. It is only that when both the currents are on, our spiritual powers are on. This brings a body in disease to a free state. These positive and negative currents are compared to the positive and negative ions of the human body.

These ions affect our whole body mechanisms.    Swara yoga says that with the manipulation of the breath flowing in and out through our nose we can regulate the inner body mechanisms and develop control over all pranic and mental activities.

Any disturbance in breathing affects the entire circulatory system, all visceral, reproductory and excretory system. Eg. The obstruction in the air flow inside increases the heart rate and decreases tissue oxidation. Further, disturbing in the alkaline base levels of the blood.

It is a surprising fact that the proportion of autonomic nerve fibres in the nasal cavity is more than 21than the other parts of the central nervous system. Breathing  affects our emotions and the release of different neurotransmitters.

The ida, the negative channel brings consciousness into every part of the body. Its energies are compared with that of the moon and hence also known as lunar nadi. Ida is associated with the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for the stimulation of visceral organs.

Thereby creating relaxation of the superficial muscles and thereby lowering the body temperature. It is for these reasons that it is said to be cooling, relaxing and introverting.

Pingala is a transmitter of prana shakti. Its energies are compared to that of the sun and hence also known as solar nadi. It activates the physical body and externalizes the awareness. It is associated with the sympathetic nervous system, which releases the adrenaline to stimulate the superficial muscles. 

This system prepares the body to fight against stress and external activities. It is for this reason that it is said to be energizing, heating and extroverting. The cerebrum consists of the right and left hemispheres.

The right hemisphere is governed by the left side of the body and the left hemisphere governs the right side of the body. Ida is connected to the right hemisphere and pingla to the left. The right hemisphere is thus responsible for psychic and extrasensory perception, and stimulates creative, artistic and musical abilities, while the left hemisphere is responsible for sequentially, linearly and logical abilities.

In this way the hemispheres in association with the nadis, control and motivate our responses in day to day life.

When we speak of prana, we do not mean the breath, air or oxygen. Precisely and scientifically speaking, prana means the original life force.


Below: Kumbhaka Pranayama

The process of respiration has three components.  Pooraka is inspiration of air, kumbhaka means retention, and rechaka is expiration. 

Kumbhaka is the pause between an inhale and exhale.. the retention or holding the breath, a state where there is no inhalation or exhalation.

The kumbhaka which follows the exhale is called the bahya kumbhaka and that which follows the inhale is called the antara kumbhaka.  Bahya means outer/exterior.  Antara means inner/interior.

Antar Kumbhaka is ceasing of breath when the inhalation (or Poorak) is complete and the lungs are filled up with air. In this kumbhaka, inhalation is recommended to be slightly forceful to take more air than normal and ceasing it as per one's ability.

Bahya Kumbhaka  is ceasing of breath when the exhalation (or Rechak) is complete. It is also recommended to exhale more than normal and then cease it as per one's ability. Bahir kumbhaka is not used very often.

Kevala kumbhaka implies holding the breath with no particular state of respiration in consideration. Kevala kumbhaka is one of the final stages of yoga parallel with the state of samadhi

Practicing kumbhaka for a long time increases endurance of physiological as well as psychological structure of an individual. That retention of the breath after deep inhalation is a pranayama by itself.

Ordinary breathing is a mechanical function performed by  the physical body, but in swara yoga breathing is a process  which can be manipulated and controlled. . Every hour or every  hour and 30 minutes the active nostril changes. This  rhythm regulates all the psychological and physiological  processes. 

If the swara is irregular, it is a clear indication  that something is not functioning properly in the body. . 
One swara flows through the left nostril,  another flows through the right, and the third flows through  both nostrils together. 

The different swaras influence us in  various ways by stimulating different energy centres and  aspects of the nervous system. The rhythm of the body is based on the  biorhythms, the energy rhythms of the body, and it also  relates to the two hemispheres of the brain.  . 

Mind, life force and spirit combined constitute the  human being. In swara yoga, mind is known as chitta, life  force as prana and spirit as atma. Chitta controls the sensory  nerves: the eyes, nose, tongue, ears and skin. Prana controls  the five organs of action: speech, hands, feet, reproductive  and urinary/excretory organs. Atma is the overall witness or  controller.

The left swara presides over  mental actions, the right swara over physical actions, and  both swaras together preside over spiritual actions When the left nostril flows, it indicates that the mental  energy, chitta, is predominant, and the pranic energy is  weak. When the right nostril flows, the pranic forces are  stronger and the mental aspect is weak. 

When both nostrils  operate together, it indicates that the spiritual energy, the  force of the atma, is in power. Swara yoga enables us to understand the nature of the  breath and its influence on the body because the different  swaras lead to different types of action, mental, physical and  spiritual. 

When you are meditating, praying or contemplating  the truth, it is spiritual action. When you are walking, talking,  urinating or eating, it is physical action. When digestion is  going on and the enzymes are flowing in the body, it is  physical action. 

But when you are worried or have many  thoughts on your mind, or when you are planning something, it is mental action. If the right nostril flows when you are meditating,  you will have physical difficulties. The body will be restless.

If the left nostril is flowing, you may not be physically disturbed, but the mind will wander. However, when both nostrils are open, the mind becomes one-pointed. Then you  can easily become absorbed in the process of meditation.  

Swara yoga aims at harmonizing the mind and body by adjusting the actions with the swara. The energy flows created by the left and right swaras act something like the positive and negative currents in an electrical circuit. 

The left swara is the negative line, while he right is the positive. 

When the right nostril is flowing, pingala stimulates the body. When the left nostril is flowing, ida stimulates the mental faculties. During the time when the swara is alternating, both nostrils become active simultaneously. Then sushumna nadi  stimulates the atma or spiritual potential. 

But this usually occurs only during the period of changeover for a couple of minutes. Sushumna nadi is the cause of spiritual actions and it is the purpose of every yogic and tantric system to activate it. 

Sushumna runs straight up the centre of the spine and merges with ida and pingala a little above the nasal root at ajna chakra, the point behind the eyebrow centre. . When both nostrils are active, it is an indication that the sushumna passage is open. Therefore, equalizing the breath is important for it is associated with the opening of sushumna nadi.

When sushumna flows, the mental and physical energy patterns become even and rhythmic, the thoughts are stilled and the mind is calm. Therefore, it is also known as the shoonya swara. Shoonya means void. For the yogi this is the most significant type of swara because it aids in the practice of dhyana or meditation.

The aim of swara yoga is therefore to develop the shoonya swara by reducing the activities of the alternating breath. 

According to the Shiva Swarodaya: "One has to know about prana and its variations, the nadis or energy pathways, and the different tattwas or elements of the macrocosmos. 

Through the application of such knowledge, the swara yogi can know all the events of the universe which are both auspicious and inauspicious. He will come to realize that the shakti of the swara, inherent prana, is functioning throughout the whole of creation, and that ultimately even the form of Lord Shiva is the swara, the breath and the prana.

Prana, has two aspects - cosmic and individual. Cosmic prana is very subtle and can only be perceived by the infinite mind, but individual prana related to the body is grosser and more tangible. In the order of creation, prana emanates from the unmanifest reality known as hiranyagarbha, the golden womb or egg.

 On the physical level it manifests as individual existence. Swara yoga develops awareness of the manifestation and existence of prana within our own being so that we can come to realize its cosmic propensity. In Shiva Swarodaya, the breath is referred to as the vehicle of Brahman or cosmic consciousness


According to swara yoga the body is a storehouse of vital energy, a dynamo with infinite electrical currents flowing throughout. The ordinary man sees this body as a combination of flesh, blood and bone. 

But the yogis and scientists have perceived a greater force behind the physical elements, and that is the force of energy or prana the yogis found, that there is an energy link between the physical and psychic bodies. 

The positive or negative charge of ions in the body has also been seen to influence specific physical and mental functions .  Therefore, if you can control these energies, you can control the body and mind.
