The oral vaccine (OPV) being given to Indian babies can multiply and spread to other babies if and when they are unvaccinated. On the other hand, the IPV that is given through injection, though expensive, is a safe way of immunization as there is no chance of the virus replicating in the gut of the immunized child and spreading to other children. well --
2 decades ago, i made a surprise inspection of the ships lifeboats and found them in poor condition.
i had the THIRD MATE with me-- and i told him, that i want the boats painted-- and since he allowed the boats to regress so much- he must do the painting himself-
this officer was from a south china sea nation , known for keeping one knife in the pocket and another smaller sharper one inside the socks. and NO captain takes liberties with them.
so one day , i was holding a technical class about INERT GAS and CRUDE OIL WASH and all were present except the third mate.
so i send the indian cadet -- i told him that he might be in the life boat painting, he must attend the meet.
the cadet came back and said that the third mate heard him out , but resumed his work , in a deep sulk
then i send the second mate, mate -with the same result- he just ignored him.
so i went myself-- told him to STOP what he is doing and attend the class-
he then came to my cabin along with me and sat there silent for the next 45 minutes-- in a DEEP SULK.
the ship was crossing the pacific.
the next morning my radio officer told me that the third mate has gone into the AGGRO mode - and was brandishing a huge knife for all to see -- a sort of warning-- which this nationality was famous for.
things transpired and my chief officer and chief engineer advised me-- it is better to get him off the ship at honolulu-- as he was on a sort of WORK TO RULE.. and having cold war with ALL.
so a day before honolulu i called the radio officer with his sign off accounts sheet , signed it and told him to pay him off .
radio officer ( a parsi ) comes back with a RED face and says - he refused to sign his wage sheet -- saying that he wants his monthly allotments of the past 2 months ( already sent to his bank ) in cash too. he claimed he had NOT received it.
i verified with my shore office and found that his money was already collected by his wife, and he has made a phone call to her already .
then i asked for the wage sheet --kept it on my office table-- went into my bed room and got my 500 US dollar knife ( cold steel- so sharp that you know you have been cut only when warm blood trickles ) and kept this knife and pen on either side of the wage sheet like fork and knife.
radio officer ran-- he said he will NOT be witness to this--but i could see him looking through the door curtain slit.
i called the third mate-- told him to sign -- and said i will NOT pay him the money he signed for till 10 seconds before he disembarks at honolulu.
these are my orders-- no choice given--
if he thinks other wise pick up the knife.
quietly the man signed the sheet --and walked out .
i could see the radio officer running away.
i called the officer back-- gave him a cold beer -and asked him what transpired-- why things had to come to this stage --that i had to sack him.
believe it or not-- the man cried-- he apologized -- he said , the cadet whom i sent first was RUDE in his tone when he called him from the boat -
YOOOUUU- CAPTAIN WANTS YOU IN HIS CABIN NOW -- he did NOT tell him that he whole class was waiting for him..
and later when second mate and chief mate called him-- he felt that since he refused the cadet , it would hurt his manhood if he came when higher ranks called him.
i believed him- for the sardar cadet was a bit of a tough joe.
then i paid him his money-- and told him, that his next contract on another ship in the same company is assured- capt ajit vadakayil's word ( known to all ).
lesson? -- be FAIR !
never punish a man based on one incident.
everybody is having a tough time-- and trying their best .
